Elmex Gelée: The Amine-Fluoride Gel You Can't Buy in the US

Ask a dentist in Zurich, Munich or Prague what to use once a week to protect your enamel and the answer is almost always the same small red-and-white tube: Elmex Gelée. It has been on European pharmacy shelves since 1969, it is prescribed to children with high caries risk and to adults with sensitive teeth or braces – and it is one of the products our customers in the United States, Canada and Australia re-order most often, because nothing comparable is sold there.

What is Elmex Gelée?

Elmex Gelée is a highly concentrated dental gel with 12,500 ppm fluoride (1.25 %) from a combination of two amine fluorides (Olaflur and Dectaflur) and sodium fluoride. Amine fluoride is the key difference from ordinary toothpaste: its surfactant-like molecule spreads quickly over the tooth surface, forms a stable calcium-fluoride layer and keeps releasing fluoride for hours. In practice this means:

• markedly fewer new cavities – the effect that made Elmex Gelée a standard in German and Swiss caries prevention,
• remineralisation of early enamel lesions (white spots),
• rapid relief for sensitive tooth necks, because exposed dentine tubules are sealed,
• protection around brackets, crowns and implants.

Why there is no US version

In the United States a fluoride concentration this high is classified as a prescription drug and sold only through dental offices as "prescription-strength" 5,000 ppm pastes. Amine fluoride itself was never registered with the FDA, so the entire Elmex amine-fluoride range – Gelée, Elmex Sensitive Professional, Elmex Opti-namel – simply does not exist on the American market. Europeans, however, buy Elmex Gelée in any pharmacy, which is why so many US customers order it from Europe for personal use.

How to use it

Once a week, in the evening after normal brushing, brush all tooth surfaces with a pea-sized amount of Elmex Gelée for about two minutes, then spit out without rinsing. Do not eat or drink for 30 minutes. Children from 6 years may use it under supervision; for sensitive teeth it can be used more often on the affected areas, as recommended by your dentist. One 25 g tube lasts an adult around six months.
