Astrid: The Czech Beauty Brand Born in a Prague Soap Shop
Ask a Czech grandmother which cream she used in her twenties and there is a good chance the answer will be "Astrid". Ask her granddaughter what is in her make-up bag today and you may hear the same name. Few beauty brands manage to stay on bathroom shelves for generations without turning into a museum piece. Astrid did it, and its story says a lot about Czech cosmetics in general.
From a soap shop in Prague to a household name
The roots of Astrid go back to the 19th century, to a small soap shop run by František Prochaska on Celetná Street in the heart of Prague's Old Town. Soap-making grew into a cosmetics factory, and the brand that came out of it took a name inspired by the word astra, a star. Today the brand itself speaks of more than 175 years of history, which makes it one of the oldest cosmetic names in Central Europe.
Through the 20th century Astrid became part of everyday life in Czechoslovakia. Its factory also produced cosmetics under licence for well-known international brands, which brought know-how and high standards that the company kept long after those years. For many families, an Astrid cream simply was face cream.
A brand that reinvented itself
In 2014 Astrid became part of the Greek cosmetics group Sarantis, and around 2015/2016 the brand went through what it calls its "rebirth": new packaging, new formulas and a clear goal to speak to younger women without losing the people who had trusted it for decades. The result is a range that mixes beloved classics with modern actives like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, bioretinol and prebiotics, at prices that remain refreshingly normal.
Astrid products worth knowing
Almond Care Nourishing Face Cream: the beloved classic
If one product sums up Astrid, it is the almond cream. The Astrid Almond Care Nourishing Face Cream is a rich day-and-night cream with almond oil for dry and very dry skin. The Czech box even calls it a "beloved recipe". As the heating season starts, it is the kind of no-nonsense comfort cream that just works.
Batole: the cold-weather cream every Czech kid knows
Before a winter walk, Czech parents reach for Astrid Batole Wind & Weather. It is a protective face cream for babies and toddlers that shields delicate cheeks from frost and wind. Plenty of adults secretly use it too, especially skiers and dog walkers.
Hydro X-Cell: the modern face of Astrid
The Astrid Hydro X-Cell Gel Cream shows how far the brand has come. It is a light, non-comedogenic gel cream for normal to combination skin, with a prebiotic complex that supports the skin's natural balance. It absorbs instantly and works well under make-up.
Bioretinol and the small essentials
For mature skin, the Astrid Bioretinol Advanced Anti-Wrinkle Serum brings a gentle retinol-style active with bakuchiol into an affordable serum. And do not overlook the humble Astrid Lip Balm. It is a small stick that lives in coat pockets all over Czechia from October to April.
Why Astrid is worth a try
Astrid is what many people love about Czech cosmetics: honest formulas, long tradition and prices that do not need justifying. It is also very hard to find outside Central Europe, which is exactly why we ship it worldwide.
Start with the classic Almond Care cream for dry autumn skin, add a lip balm for your pocket, and discover the brand Czech women have trusted for generations.
