Every autumn we get the same emails. "I'm suddenly losing far more hair than in June — what happened?" Usually nothing happened. Seasonal shedding is one of the most predictable things your scalp does, and September and October are its peak. Here is what is actually going on, and what is worth putting in your bathroom cabinet.

Why autumn is the shedding season

Hair does not grow continuously. Each follicle cycles through a growth phase and a resting phase, and at the end of the resting phase the hair is released. Those phases are not synchronised across your head — which is why you normally lose a few dozen hairs a day without noticing. In late summer a larger-than-usual share of follicles tends to enter the resting phase together, and a few months later they let go together. The result is a brush that looks alarming for a few weeks.

Two practical consequences. First, this kind of shedding is diffuse — thinner all over, not bald patches. Second, it stops on its own, usually within six to eight weeks. If you are losing hair in defined patches, or the shedding runs on for months, that is a dermatologist's question, not a shampoo's.

What caffeine shampoos can and cannot do

Caffeine is the ingredient European shoppers ask about most, and it deserves an honest answer. Caffeine applied to the scalp is studied for its effect on the hair follicle, but the evidence is modest and these are cosmetics, not medicines. They will not regrow a receding hairline. What they do reliably is clean the scalp well and give you a two-minute daily ritual — and the leave-on time matters more than the brand: work the lather into the scalp and leave it there for about two minutes before rinsing.

Alpecin C1 Caffeine Shampoo is the original of the category, made in Germany and the one most people mean when they say "caffeine shampoo". Alpecin Double Effect adds an anti-dandruff active, which is useful in autumn when scalps get flaky as the heating goes on.

The Czech alternative

If you would rather not use a strongly perfumed pharmacy shampoo every day, Bione Cosmetics Keratin + Caffeine Regenerating Shampoo is the gentler Czech option — caffeine and keratin with macadamia oil, no parabens or silicones, and a plainer scent. Pair it with the Keratin + Caffeine Leave-in Conditioner if your lengths are dry; shedding hair is often also damaged hair, and breakage halfway down the shaft reads as "thinning" just as much as loss at the root.

The boring things that matter more

  • Wash more often, not less. Leaving a greasy scalp alone for a week does not save hair; it just adds irritation. Shedding hairs have already detached — washing only collects them.
  • Be gentle when it is wet. Wet hair stretches and snaps. Blot, do not rub, and comb from the ends upwards.
  • Ease off the heat. Autumn is a good moment to let hair air-dry more often.
  • Check the obvious. Crash diets, a recent illness, low iron and post-pregnancy hormones all cause the same diffuse shedding, and no shampoo fixes any of them.

The short version

Autumn shedding is normal, self-limiting and much less visible to other people than it is to you. Use a scalp-focused shampoo you will actually use daily, treat the lengths kindly, and give it two months. If it has not settled by then, see a doctor rather than buying a fourth bottle.
