Winter Makeup Tips: How to Keep Your Skin From Drying Out
Cold air outside, dry heating indoors — winter is tough on your skin. Constant temperature changes can leave it dry and red, and small flakes of dead skin may even appear. With the right routine, though, your makeup can look just as fresh in January as it does in June.
Start with gentle cleansing
Good-looking skin starts with a proper cleansing routine. It removes dirt and prepares your skin for makeup. In winter, stressed skin appreciates extra-gentle care, such as Dermacol Sensitive Calming Toner or Sensitive Cleansing Milk.
Nourish before you apply makeup
After thorough cleansing, apply a nourishing cream with a rich texture and a protective effect that soothes the skin — for example Natural Almond Day Cream, or browse our other day creams. We also recommend using a night cream during winter — it helps prevent flaky patches on the face, especially between the eyebrows and around the nose. Natural Almond Night Cream is a lovely choice.
Primer and foundation
Once your cream has absorbed, move on to primer and makeup. Keep in mind that in the winter months, makeup without adequate hydration underneath can dry out your skin. And remember: Dermacol Make-up Cover is a high-coverage foundation, so it's important to apply a primer under it. If you struggle with dark under-eye circles, a corrector will take care of them.
Don't forget the transparent Invisible Fixing Powder, which naturally mattifies the skin, sets your makeup and protects it all day long.
One simple rule: the lighter the layers of makeup, the less strain on your skin.
Eyes and eyebrows
For a casual winter look, we recommend light colors like white and pink. Start with a white base eye shadow applied over the entire eyelid. Next, add a pale pink shade to the inner corner and under the eyebrows. Finish by applying a darker pink shadow across the lid.
Lips
Start with a thin layer of long-lasting lip color. Outline your lips with a pencil, apply your lipstick, dust on a little transparent fixing powder, and gently press your lips into a paper towel. Then apply the contour pencil and lipstick once more. The color will last longer and your lips won't dry out.
If you're tired of dry, cracked lips, choose a moisturizing lipstick with nourishing oils and vitamin E to keep your lips hydrated — in shades from popular nudes to statement reds.
Beautiful skin needs consistent care — so drink plenty of water and cleanse your skin regularly.
Mini FAQ
Why does my skin flake in winter?
Swings between cold outdoor air and dry indoor heating strip moisture from the skin. Gentle cleansing, rich creams and lighter makeup layers help keep flakes away.
Do I really need a primer under Dermacol Make-up Cover?
Yes — it's a high-coverage foundation, so a hydrating primer underneath helps protect your skin, especially in winter.
